Dates and Brunches

Yes, dates as in the fruit – my life is not all that exciting! It’s friday again! So of course, I have some new finds for you.

I think the biggest, truest discovery this week was covered in yesterday’s post on intuitive eating.  To tell the truth, I was really hesitant to post it, thinking that I would get some nasty replays – but the blog world has been there for me once again.  Thanks, all! Commenters, bloggers, and readers alike 🙂

A good restaurant brunch is really good.

This morning I went to breakfast/brunch at a Chicago chain called Orange with a Peel.  They call themselves a ‘contemporary’ brunch restaurant, and have some really cool things on the menu, like chai latte french toast or jelly doughnut pancakes!  I went with the tried-and-true choice.

I asked them to add blueberries... unfortunately they were frozen, not fresh 😦

I apologize for the sub-par photos, I was using my phone’s camera.

Make it yourself all natural sweetener.

sweet & simple date paste sweetener

made only with medjool dates, soaked and processed!  I’ve used it to sweeten my coffee and my oats so far, and it’s great!  Very light, and doesn’t change the flavor too much.  And super cheap, too!

Savory Oats. Why didn’t I do this sooner?

all mixed up and ready to eat!

These made a full meal, but were light and so delicious!

Now it’s off to bed before Zumba (!!) tomorrow morning.

Do you like restaurant brunch?

Have you ever made your own sweetener or used date paste? Thoughts?

Savory oats – yes or no?

  1. I’ve never had orange flavored coffee before, it sounds like it would be delicious though! I’m still hesitant to try savory oats I’m pretty sure everyone that’s tried it has liked it, but I’m just so used to them being sweet 🙂

  2. I just read your post from yesterday…loved it and of course can relate to pretty much everything you wrote!
I usually like restaurant brunches, as long as the quality is good of course and plenty of fresh and healthy options are on the menu 🙂

  3. darn it and here I though I was gonna have to wheedle out the details of your “date” but since it’s just the fruit this’ll do 😉 The sweetener does look good though…never tried savory oats, but you know me i tend to like the savory over sweet for most things.

  4. I adore savory oats! Oats are probably my favorite grain to work with and eat, so I use them as a base for a lot of my savory meals. Lately I’ve really been loving the sweet and savory combo as well, even if it DOES get me some strange looks from observers 😉 And I’ve never made date paste, but it’s something that I’ve always wanted to try. I’ve pureed dried fruit before to use as an addition to baking, but I’ve never tried it on it’s own. It sounds fantastic, though, and definitely something I’ll have to try when I buy some more dates!

    • Ah yes, I know those kinds of looks… get them from my family members all the time! And the date paste is great – it’s lighter than most liquid sweeteners which is really nice for coffee and oatmeal, but I’m not yet sure how it holds up in baking. We shall see!

  5. Brunch is one of my favorite meals to eat out. I love how you can get breakfast or lunch or both – whatever you’re craving! I feel like most of the brunches that I’ve gone out for have been really impressive. I can’t think of a bad meal I’ve ever had at brunch!
